The purpose of our Roller Operations training is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to operate a roller across many industries within Australia. At Gallmac, we offer a detailed training plan in a small class setting allowing everyone sufficient one-on-one time for their practical training, which is essential for operating a roller in the real-world.
A roller is a compactor type machine primarily used in the construction of roads for compacting materials such as soil, gravel and asphalt through vibration, kneading, direct pressure and impact loading. There are several types of rollers available depending on the work to be completed, including cylindrical rollers, smooth wheeled rollers and grid rollers.
This course will teach you to plan and prepare a job for roller operations, conduct routine operational checks, operate a roller using the various techniques, adjust roller drum according to activities, shut-down and prepare a roller for relocation to a designated location and finally maintain a clear work environment.
All elements of this course are essential and will be taught through written and practical teachings at our training site in Brisbane. The course material will include, but is not limited to the following;
- Hazard identification, environmental issues and control implementation
- WHS legislation, standards and relevant codes of practice
- How to operate a roller using various techniques
- Routine operational checks
- Characteristics and functions of the various roller drums, bars and brooms
- Maintenance and isolation procedures
- How to implement an efficient traffic management plan
- Relocation of a roller between sites
- Ground conditions and characteristics of various materials
- Earthwork calculations
On completion of this course, the successful candidate will have the skills to demonstrate the following;
- Identify and report potential workplace hazards such as unstable ground conditions, underground services and weather conditions
- Continuously monitor hazards to ensure the safety of all workers and machinery on site
- Assess the risks associated with roller operations and implement the necessary control measures using the hierarchy of controls
- Carry out all routine before and after operational checks such as start-up and shut-down checks
- Complete roller activities such as compaction, and sealing and finishing using various materials
- Recognise the functions and capabilities of roller attachments such as interchangeable drums, bars and brooms and adjust techniques according to site procedures
- Conduct maintenance checks of a roller and isolate if faulty according to site procedures
- Relocate a roller between sites and assist with transferring to a trailer when necessary
- Understand the different soil types for efficient compaction
- Use mathematical procedures to estimate earthwork calculations
- Effectively communicate with all workplace personnel specifically other machine operators on site and ensure communication equipment such as signage and two-way radios are adhered to
- Document all data relevant to roller operations in line with site policies and procedures
- Comply with relevant health and safety legislation, standards and site procedures
On successful completion of this training, students will have the skills and practical experience to conduct roller operations across many Australian work sites in compliance with all obligatory health and safety regulations.
